Injury Breakdown: Zach Ertz - ARI

You know, it's really a shame that Zach Ertz tore his ACL and his MCL in Week 10 last year because he was one of the few reliably good tight ends that we had in the league last season. He was sixth last year in average PPR points per game and put up over 10 PPR points in all but one of the games outside of the one he was hurt in.

Now Ertz and the Cardinals find themselves at a crossroads this year. The team doesn't have an out for him until next offseason, but he likely will be pushing it to be 100% by the start of 2023. On top of that, we have a talented second-year wide receiver in tight end Trey McBride, who many, including myself, had as the best tight end in last year's draft class, kind of waiting in the wings behind Ertz to see what happens.

Can Ertz regain last year's starting role? I think it's possible. But can he do it if he doesn't start the year as the tight end one for the team? Now, his injury is more complicated than a normal ACL tear because he had the MCL involved as well. The addition of that MCL and the need for it to be repaired during the surgery may push his recovery timeline further into the season.

Combine that with the fact that his quarterback, Kyler Murray, is also recovering from an ACL tear, and I just can't see any way that Zach Ertz is going to be worth taking in your fantasy drafts. He's on my do not draft list, especially when he's only five tight ends away from Trey McBride, who's younger and just seems to have more juice left in the tank from a fantasy perspective.
