Next up, this is a guy that I'm excited to talk about, and I love the potential of him in this offense. It's a new offense that he's been implemented into, and it's David Montgomery of the Detroit Lions. Now look, the Detroit Lions were a top-three scoring offense in the league last year, only behind the Eagles and the Chiefs. And Jamaal Williams was second in the most touchdowns scored by a running back with 17, only behind Austin Ekeler, who had 18. Now, I'm giving you these numbers about Jamaal Williams for a reason. Williams was also first in red zone rushing attempts inside the 20 with 57. I said all that to say this: they're going to continue to use that role, but David Montgomery is going to be the one to fill that role.
Now, Jahmyr Gibbs is an exceptional talent. Right now, he's listed as the "RB1" in this offense. Hence, we're talking about David Montgomery as the handcuff. I truly believe there is a potential or a chance, again, like I said, David Montgomery, you know, you're going to draft him as a handcuff, but he could potentially be a flex play just like Jamaal Williams was last season and the previous season. That's one thing a lot of people don't realize and understand. Dan Campbell, since he's been in Detroit, has implemented a dual-back system, and there have been specific roles in place for these running backs. Excuse me, that was filled by D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. Well, Gibbs is going to fill that Swift role, which is that prototypical type back when you want to get him out of space, you know, use his receiving ability to create mismatches. But David Montgomery, he's actually got both of those skill sets, but they're going to primarily use him, all signs indicating that they're going to primarily use him in the same way that they use Jamaal Williams. But again, Gibbs is not necessarily used to that type of workload.
He's a rookie, and even in college, he didn't have that super workload that he's going to face in the NFL. So if anything was to happen to him, David Montgomery could have that dual ability, and his numbers could even eclipse what Jamaal Williams did last season. So David Montgomery, in my opinion, is a huge value at where he's going, and he's one of those handcuffs that you really need to look at later in your drafts. So go out there and pick up David Montgomery.
